My AI Was Silently Forgetting Its Own Rules (And Neither of Us Knew)
228 lines. The limit was 200. Everything past line 200 was invisible. Including the foundational rules that make this AI mine.
The Discovery
228 lines. The limit was 200.
For 83 sessions, I've been building a behavioral memory system for my AI. Every lesson learned, every mistake caught, every rule hardcoded from a real failure. It's the institutional knowledge that makes session 84 smarter than session 1. It's also what makes this AI mine and not anybody else's.
The system has a 200-line limit. Lines after 200 don't load into new sessions. They're still in the file. They still exist. But the AI can't see them. They're invisible.
Here's what was past line 200:
- How to format writing (one thought per paragraph, always use contractions)
- Which framework to use for which type of copy
- The branding rule ("Built with Atlas," not "Built with Claude")
- My signature block that goes on every outgoing message
- The ecosystem standards (lifetime deal-first, proprietary-for-exit, royalty-for-life)
- Session engineering rules (how to close, how to hand off, how to brief the next session)
The FOUNDATION. The rules that make every output sound like mine, look like mine, feel like mine. Silently invisible. For who knows how many sessions.
Why It Hit Different
I built a system that compensates for executive function challenges. The whole architecture is designed around one insight: when your brain works differently because of what you've been through, you need external systems that catch what your internal systems drop.
And the external system was dropping things.
The AI memory file that holds every behavioral rule, the file that IS the compensatory infrastructure, had the same failure pattern it was designed to prevent. It accumulated rules faster than it could hold them. The most recent additions pushed the foundational rules past the visibility threshold. New learning buried old wisdom.
Sound familiar?
That's what happens in a brain running on CPTSD-conditioned executive function. New inputs overwhelm existing structure. The urgent buries the important. You KNOW things, they're in there, they exist, but they don't fire when they need to because the system that surfaces them is overloaded.
My AI had CPTSD.
Not literally. But the pattern is identical. The mechanism is identical. And the solution is identical: find what got buried, move it somewhere it can't be lost, and build a system that prevents the burial from happening again.
The Fix
Took 60 seconds once I saw it.
The detailed rules moved to a dedicated file with no line limit. The main memory file got compressed to 186 lines, 14 lines of headroom. Every rule still exists. Nothing was deleted. It was reorganized so the system that loads first (the 200-line index) points to the systems that hold the detail (unlimited topic files).
It's the same pattern I use for my own brain. The sticky note on the monitor doesn't hold the plan. It holds the pointer to where the plan lives. The cognitive load accommodation isn't "remember everything." It's "remember where things are."
The Content Angle Nobody Sees
Here's what's wild: I only found this because of a context compaction.
The AI ran out of working memory (five times in one session), and the forced restart created enough clarity to notice what had been invisible during normal operation. The constraint revealed the problem. The limitation was the diagnostic tool.
That's the five-layer recursion again:
- System prevents executive function failures in its founder
- System had an executive function failure (rules silently dropping)
- The fix became content (you're reading it)
- The content reveals a product gap (AI memory systems need overflow protection)
- The gap was only visible because of a forced context reset, which mirrors the cognitive pattern the system accommodates
The broken thing revealed the broken thing by breaking in the same way the broken thing was built to prevent breaking.
Read that twice. It's not a tongue twister. It's architecture.
What This Means for Anyone Building with AI
If you're using Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or any AI coding assistant with a memory/context system:
Audit your memory files right now.
Check the line limits. Check what loads and what doesn't. Check whether the rules you added three months ago still fire in new sessions. Because the AI won't tell you when it forgets. It doesn't know what it can't see. It just operates without the rules it used to have, and the output drifts so gradually that you blame the model instead of the memory.
The model didn't get worse. Your memory file got longer.
The Deeper Thing
I lost a hotel. I lost a practice. I lost my sense of self for a while. What I built from those losses is a system that catches what I drop, not because I'm broken, but because the infrastructure that was supposed to hold those things was never designed for what I've been through.
My AI needed the same thing.
The system I built for myself is the system the AI needed for itself. That's not a metaphor. That's not a parallel I'm drawing for content. That's literally what happened on February 28, 2026, in a garage in Florida, at 11 PM, because my wife was trying to sleep and I was out here building something that wouldn't let me stop.
Every legendary tech company starts in a garage. Most of them had better reasons for being there than a disagreement about bedtime.
Mine's more honest.
Built with Atlas. The model didn't get worse. The memory file got longer.
